Dec 15, 2016

Pul-e-Alam: Unidentified gunmen killed a prominent Afghan journalist in Mohammad Agha district of Logar province on Thursday, an official said

Nasir Amir, Police chief of Mohammad Agha district told the Afghanistan Journalists Center that the incident took place today afternoon when the unidentified gunmen shot dead the editor-in-chief of Melli Paigham Radio near his home in Kutub Khil area of the district.

After being informed by residents, the security personnel arrived at the shooting scene and launched an investigation, he said

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but local journalists previously received warning from the Talbian militants.

Mudassir 53, father of four children has already warned the security forces about the death threat by unknown men and asked for protection.

Prior to Modassir's death, at least 12 journalists had been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

'We condemns in the strongest possible terms murdering of Mohammad Nasir asking the government immediately commence an investigation in order to identify the suspects and take swift action against those responsible', said Ahmad Quraishi, executive director of the Afghanistan Journalists Center(AFJC)

'Unfortunately, the culture of impunity that is behind these attacks are yet to be addressed by the Afghan authorities despite their repeated boasts and promises, we can say, almost all of the suspects yet brought to justice.’ add Mr. Quraishi

AFJC's record show that the death of Mudassir brought to more than 66 the number of journalists and media workers killed in Afghanistan since the falling of the Taliban regime in 2001; with 13 dead just this year makes 2016 the deadliest year for the media community in Afghanistan
