Journalist critically wounded after brutally stabbed in Kalat city

Kalat: A journalist was critically wounded after he was brutally attacked with knife by unknown gunmen in Kalat city, capital of southern Zabul province.

Ahmad Wali Sarhadi, provincial representative of the Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) said the incident took place late on Friday afternoon in the Sink area of the Kalat city.

He said the journalist Sebghatullah Ghayel was on his way from office to home when he stabbed in back and right hand by unknown men and was critically injured.

Sarhadi further added that the health condition of Ghayel and has been admitted to hospital for treatment.

Sebghatullah Ghayel is a reporter for the local Shaikh Mati radio station and ZabulTimes news website

Homayoun Gulzar, police chief for the first district of Kalat city said that one of the perpetrators has arrested by police but two others have managed to escape.

But he assured that the police is investigating the incident and will bring the other perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. But local journalists previously received warning from the Taliban militants.


The Afghanistan Journalists Center condemns this attack in the strongest terms and calls the local government officials to take immediate actions to recognize and detain all those involved behind the incident.

This comes as a young journalist for the sate run Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) was murdered by unidentified men in the same city last month.

Earlier this month, a journalist working for the private television station Ariana News was killed by a roadside bomb in the capital of southern province of Helmand.

65 journalists and media workers have been killed in Afghanistan since falling of the Taliban regime in 2001. 2016, with 12 dead makes this year the deadliest year for media community in Afghanistan.
