Purpose of the position: Reporting to the Country Director of the Open Society Afghanistan, the Media Program Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing relevant strategy and work plan, grant making and over management of the media section at the Open Society Afghanistan office (OSA). This position also supports the other two sections of civil society and women’s rights and undertakes the scholarship relevant tasks.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include the following.  OSA may add, change, or remove essential and

 

•             Assist in the development of the Afghanistan strategy, particularly on  issues relating media and freedom of expression

•             Developing and implementing communications strategies for OSA advocacy initiatives, as directed by the Country Director, and in coordination with other Program Officers

•             Leading the Media Coordination Working Group

•             Be a part of the civil society alliances and networks working on specific advocacy and campaigning issues related with strategic priorities under FOSIA work plan

•             Review grant proposals and contribute to recommendation sheets on issues relating to Media, freedom of press and freedom of expression

•             Contribute in regular management reporting

•             Coordinate  meeting among different stakeholders working on  media including donors

•             Conduct a mapping project on  media  related activities in Afghanistan

•             Maintain and develop a good understanding of the field, particularly media sectors and communications strategies that advance open society values.

•             Attend professional meetings and events including discussions with Government non-governmental organizations, the media and others towards expanding OSA efforts in the area of freedom of speech and expression.

•             Develop new strategy to work with investigative journalism institutes

•             Monitoring grantees, particularly within the media field

•             Provide support to the research/ civil society in transition and women’s rights sections

•             Other projects, as directed

Qualifications:

•             University Degree in Journalism and/or and relevant area of study

•             At least 5 years’ experience in media field

•             At least 5 years’ work experience with NGOs/INGO

•             High level English Language Skills, including written

•             Understanding of the media situation in Afghanistan

•             Ability to work without supervision

•             Willingness and ability to travel

•             Ability to work creatively and with initiative
