Reporters covering Jalalabad explosion beaten, insulted

ALALABAD, August 31, 2010

Bodyguards of Nangarhar governor beat Radio Killid's reporter and treated insultingly Ariana TV's reporter in the eastern city of Jalalabad while covering the explosion in the car of Lalpura district governor on Monday.

When Turyalai Himat of Radio Killid and Rahmatullah Ziarmal of Ariana TV rushed to the scene of explosion that destroyed car of the Lalpura district governor in front of Shahi Palace they were stopped, beaten and insulted, according to the journalists employers in Kabul.

Ziarmal said the police even threatened him with shooting if he attempted to get closer to the explosion site.

Najiba Ayubi, executive manager of Radio Killid Network in Kabul, told AFJC the police and bodyguards of the governor treated their reporter irresponsibly and unethically.

Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the Nangahar governor, said they will look into reports of mistreatment of journalists.
