KABUL: President Hamid Karzai on Thursday called upon journalists and social media users to refrain from releasing reports that might cause divisions in society.
In his fortnightly radio address, the president urged the media and users of social networking sites to avoid spreading provocative material. He suggested the posting of materials that promoted knowledge and harmony.
Karzai said good manners, mutual respect and social norms must be kept in mind while using Facebook, Twitter, writing blogs or engaging in other forms of online activity.
“This must be realised that Afghanistan is an Islamic society, hence Islamic values and principles of social responsibility must be given priority,” he argued.
Youth must exchange opinions and ideas in a well-mannered way to promote harmony, he observed. “For the past one decade, the government of Afghanistan has defended people’s right to information and press freedom...”
At the end of his speech, the president opined solidarity amongst youth was a great asset and the most important factor in nation building.Pajhwok
